So Sky Rogue just came out and my night evaporated. For those unaware, it’s a Rogue-lite dogfighting game and the Switch version of it has included motion controls where you use the joycons like a flight stick and throttle. It takes a little getting used to but once you get the feel this game becomes so much fun. I haven’t hooped and hollered that much in a while. Executing a tight corner turn to get on the tail of an enemy while deploying missile-scrambling flares to avoid getting hit, locking on to someone and blasting them out of the sky has got to be one of the best feelings with motion control.

Even if you hate them! Edit: I hadn’t realised I was the first to comment on Sky Rogue so I feel obliged to mention that there are flaws. One being no options to re-map buttons. I do find sometimes I accidentally fire off a flare instead of switching my weapons. It’s pretty inconsequential and has only happened a handful of times.
The weapon switching itself as far as I know is only mapped to a single button so you have to cycle through the weapon you want instead of selecting next or previous. Some may find that annoying. Those are the two glaring ones but so far a great experience. To piggyback on what other people are saying: if this game even remotely interests you, BUY IT! I bought this game to play with my cousin who lives with me.
He loves flight sim games; I've never really cared for them, but I'm a sucker for brightly colored, low-poly 90s-arcade aesthetics. Long story short, I got home from work at 7pm last night with this game pre-loaded, and we played until almost 2am without batting an eye! We forgot to cook dinner or even check the clock. This game is pure, unbridled fun. Anything and everything not conducive to that fun is not present. The graphics are simple, clear, and pleasing to look at. Everything is easily distinguishable, and the game performs really well.
We didn't experience any frame drops the entire night, even in splitscreen co-op. The tutorial is minimal and explains just the bare-bones of gameplay, leaving you to experiment and figure out plane/weapon configurations for yourself. It definitely doesn't do much hand-holding, although for some players this may feel a bit discouraging at first. The Danger Zone controls are also a real joy to use after a short learning curve. Whoever designed (and named) these controls on the dev team deserves big ups and a raise. There are a few flaws currently however, as others as pointed out:. Controls are not remappable.
The default controls aren't terrible but giving players more options is always a good thing. There are a decent amount of sensitivity and axis settings, but almost none of them are accessible during actual gameplay. You have to quit to menu to adjust settings, then re-enter your game to test them out.
This makes experimenting overly tedious, especially for a flight game newbie like myself. It can also be exacerbated by the last flaw:. Infinite loading screens are pretty common, about 1 in 5 or so. It's far from game-breaking, as it still keeps your progress, but it's inconvenient at best. Hopefully this all gets patched soon, I've seen it mentioned that a patch was submitted prior to release but didn't make it through in time. So maybe we'll be seeing that pretty quickly here.
This is a really great game! I've been playing Rogue Aces and Skies of Fury DX a ton lately and I am positively in love with both games.
Skies of Fury DX is a little repetitive, but in a good way. It's crazy enjoyable to fly with those controls. They aren't motion based. It's setup to be more like an RC plane actually. I've enjoyed the experience a lot though and really like Rogue-Lites in general.
I'd love to play something in the same vein that emphasizes gearing up even more. The multiplayer dog fighting is where Skies of Fury DX really shines.
You can have four people dog fighting co-op style or on teams against one another or as a free for all. The campaign missions are still really enjoyable and pretty looking. It looks a bit more realistic than this game, but I hear the fun is there. Rogue Aces is more like a 16 bit style sidescroller, but it's really fun to complete missions and harrowing to land the planes. You don't have to land or take off in Skies of Fury.
We have all of these plane options - fun in their own ways - all of the sudden - especially dog fighting. With Manticore being disappointing, I am glad I stuck with more traditional planes.
Hopefully Skies of Fury follows through their their plans to make the multiplayer work online instead of just local. It would be epic then. They have plans to release more planes and campaigns in the near future too.
There are some great threads with the developers present if anyone is curious. I have so many games, but I'm sucker for pure fun. I think the controls and the hype are going to pull me in here too. Yeah I've been having fun with them too. I've actually thought about making a Labo-esque Joystick & Throttle cardboard shell to slip the joycons in haha.
Also, weapons are tied to the D-Pad too, so you can just switch to whichever one by pressing the corresponding button. I do wish you could remap buttons too, just so I can swap targeting and fire. Overall, great game! I've just finished the campaign for Skies of Fury DX, and needed another flight game which is kinda weird because it's not really been my genre in the past. These two should do me fine for a while I reckon!
